SNOW CAMP, N.C. -- A fitness and learning program at a North Carolina elementary school is earning national recognition for its unique and innovative efforts to get kids moving.
It's called The Walking Classroom, and was just the national grand prize winner of a $50,000 grant.
Students listen to podcasts on an MP3 player with their social studies lessons, and exercise at the same time.
"You walk, and instead of sitting in a classroom, you get more air, which helps you learn," said student Cody Warren.
"My kids have seen really good test scores -- social studies in particular,” said Sylvan Elementary teacher Kristi Norman. “They listen to me, but not always the best. And this way, they get to hear it from another perspective.”
Program organizers are now hoping to take The Walking Classroom to other schools statewide.
