RALEIGH – The Triangle Transit Authority is giving its new initiative to bypass traffic jams a test drive.

TTA is launching the "bus on shoulder system" or BOSS program, which will allow buses to use the shoulder lane along portions of Interstate-40 during rush hour. The system is the first of its kind in the state and will effect the east and westbound lanes near the 15-501 interchange.

Officials say it is a way to make sure bus commuters get to their destination on time.

“We won't have to take detours like we normally do. We can just take the shoulders. It will be more efficient using the shoulders than detouring around,” said bus operator Larry Villines.

Buses will be able to use the shoulder only when traffic on the highway falls below 35 mph. The program kicks off on Monday. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
