CONCORD—The young child who was allegedly beaten by her step father returned home Thursday.
Kilah Davenport, 3, was given a police escort from Levin Children's Hospital in Charlotte to her home in Concord. Her mother Kirby Davenport says in May, Joshua Houser nearly killed Kilah.
She says her daughter is suffering from brain damage and doctors think she may never fully recover.
“I have watched her for 62 days fight to prove everyone wrong and we're not done. She took five steps yesterday after everybody said she wouldn't take one,” said Kirby Davenport.
Under the current law, if Houser is convicted he could serve up to 92 months behind bars.
The Davenports and the Justice for All Coalition are currently working on getting Kilah's Law passed. If Kilah's Law is eventually passed, child abusers who inflict permanent injuries could face from 25 years to life in prison.
