CHARLOTTE – Longer than usual lines can be expected at some Chick-fil-A restaurants Wednesday as Christian conservatives have named it "Chick-fil-A appreciation Day," urging gay marriage opponents to support the fast food chain.

The effort comes after same-sex couples announced they will stage protests at the popular restaurant later this week.

Last month, the restaurant's CEO Dan Cathy came out against gay marriage, saying the company supports the biblical definition of a family. The restaurant's backers include the Rev. Billy Graham, who plans to have Chick-fil-A for dinner tonight.

Family values groups and churches will also meet at local Chick-fil-A restaurants for a meal.

Others are showing their disapproval. Jim Henson's company pulled its Muppet toys from the restaurant's kids meals and politicians in Boston and Chicago told the chain it is not welcome there.

On Tuesday, Chick-fil-A released a statement saying that in the future it plans to stay out the same-sex marriage debate. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
