WASHINGTON--Hundreds of North Carolinians made the trip up to Washington for the inauguration, including several college students.

Before the age of 19, Saint Augustine freshman Austin Keith had two important firsts, he voted and two months later, witnessed the beginning of a new presidential term live.

“It's soaking in that I'm actually at the inauguration. I can't really believe it, but I'm thankful,” said Keith.

He and other Saint Augustine students rolled into Washington overnight for the public inauguration festivities, joining fellow North Carolinians and hundreds of thousands of others in the National Mall.

Meredith College students in Raleigh also headed north and engaged themselves in the political process, at the nation's epicenter of politics.

“This is the first time I've paid attention to hearing about each candidate and what they stand for, and really learning about the political views, so being able to to vote and being here is really fun,” said Miriam Cooper.

Students said because North Carolina was a presidential swing state again in 2012, it wasn't hard for them to become involved and active in the political process. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
