CHAPEL HILL -- Many of the kids at North Carolina Children's Hospital are away from home for weeks, even months at a time. So any little pick-me-up helps, especially when it's in the form of a favorite sweet treat.
It's a small gesture that brings a big reward to the patients at North Carolina Children's Hospital-- the Carolina Kids Cart stocked with sweet treats, hand delivered by UNC athletes.
Different team members bring by the cart everyday, with different diet appropriate treats.
"We do ice cream novelties, cupcakes, build your own ice cream sundae and coming soon we'll have fruit kabobs and soft baked pretzels," said Angela Mojica, the director of nutrition and food services.
Keeping with the athletic theme, the patients are given tickets to redeem their prize. "The tickets are actually the same tickets we use when we go to sporting events on campus when you go to a basketball game or a football game," said Mojica. "So the children identify it as going to an event."
Even the patients who barely have enough energy to get out of bed, are grateful for the distraction. "It means a lot to me because they take the time out of their own time to spend time with hurt people," said Taylor Daniel.
