OXFORD – Granville County paramedics had to respond to one of their own who was killed in an accident just north of Oxford Tuesday morning.
Authorities said Merle Faucette, 52, was riding his motorcycle on Highway 96 traveling to see his mother who was in the hospital at Duke. That is when Grover Barnette, 63, ran off the road, overcorrected and hit Faucette head on.
The small Granville County EMS family is mourning the loss of Faucette.
Both men are from Oxford. Barnette was taken to Granville Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. He was charged with misdemeanor death by a motor vehicle.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” Lee Isley, the Granville Health Systems CEO, said.
The eight-year seasoned veteran was off duty at the time of the accident.
“He was one of our senior paramedics and definitely helped other paramedics when we hired them,” Brand said. “He was a great asset to our team.”
The team is now dealing with heavy hearts as they grasp losing their fellow coworker and friend.
“He was a good family man, he was a great paramedic and he will be sadly missed by Granville EMS,” Brand said.
Authorities said Barnette fell asleep at the wheel.
