CHARLOTTE – The man charged with killing another man during a bar fight over the weekend made his first court appearance Monday.

Keenan Gay, 23, is accused of pushing Robert Kingston into the street during a fight at Ed's Tavern on Saturday night. Kingston was hit and killed by a passing car. Gay, a former UNC football player and a student at the Charlotte School of Law, is charged with murder.

Gay is being held without bond and a judge Monday denied a request to speed up the legal process for his bond hearing.

Alan Cole, the owner of Ed's Tavern, saw the whole thing happen.

"There was no altercation, no fight, no nothing inside the building, we would have been on that," he said. "One them had the other one by the collar but it kind of looked as if like, two buddies, because the guy in the front being led out was smiling."

Cole said things escalated outside the bar and he and security were yelling stop.

"[The] individual got right to the end of the sidewalk and tossed him into the street and about a half second later he was struck by a vehicle," he said.

Cole said he grabbed Gay, who broke away from him and ran down Park Road.

Ed's Tavern was closed Sunday out of respect for the victim's family.
