MADISON — Starting Monday the Rockingham County public landfill will be open to county residents to dispose of waste without charge.
The service promotes beautification of the County and encourages improved waste disposal practices by citizens. The landfill will be open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. and on Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Some residents said they plan their trash trips around this time of year to save money. The impact has been significant. Last year the landfill took in an extra 400 tons on top of its weekly average of just over 1,600 tons.
"By being able to come this week we've been able to offset a lot," said resident Helen Tuggle.
With this free disposal week at the landfill, people are encouraged to clean up and throw out.
"We want the county to present the best image it can for everyone," Ronnie Tate of the Rockingham County Public Landfill said. "So it gets it out of the yards, off the side of the road and keeps illegal dumping down."
This is the 21st year the landfill has offered a free week of trash disposal services for residents, costing the landfill about 25,000 dollars to handle the extra waste and employee overtime.
