WILMINGTON -- It wasn't a surprise that several schools contacted UNC Wilmington to speak to Cynthia Cooper-Dyke, head coach of the women's basketball team, following the program's second WNIT appearance.
Tuesday afternoon the school was surprised when she resigned to take Texas Southern's head coaching position.
"She's done a wonderful job building the program here instilling a winning attitude and generating interest within the community. As a result of experience as a coach and background as a player, she's going to be a sought after product." said Jimmy Bass, director of athletics for UNCW.
In two seasons as UNCW's Women's basketball coach, Cooper Dyke led the Lady Seahawks to 44 wins and the program's first two postseason appearances. UNCW played in the WNIT following the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.
"Cynthia raised the level of expectation here at UNCW," said Jimmy Bass
While the search for Cooper-Dyke's replacement is underway, Jimmy Garrity, assistant coach of the UNCW's women's basketball team, will serve as the interim coach.
"He has tremendous responsibility, we want the young women to stay focused on their academics and finish strong in the final weeks of the semester. Jimmy has already talked to the returning players and their parents." explained Jimmy Bass.
UNCW is looking to hire a coach who keeps the program headed in the right direction on and off the court. There is not a timetable to hire Cooper-Dyke's successor, but the goal is find the right coach as soon as possible.
