WAKE FOREST, NC -- The body of a woman who lives in Wake County was found Wednesday more than 160 miles away, in Galax, Va., in her husband's truck.

The couple lived on Creedmoor Road, just outside of Wake Forest.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office said they're now investigating two crime scenes; one at the couple's home and the other, the truck where the body was found in Virginia.

Sheriff Donnie Harrison said their investigation started around 10 a.m. Wednesday with a 911 call from the couple's neighbor.

“They saw what appeared to be a body in the back yard and called us,” he said. “When we arrived on the scene, we didn't find anybody and we started asking questions.”

The sheriff's office notified all law enforcement to look for 42-year-old Sonny Howard and his wife, 50-year-old Sherry.

Officials in Galax, Va. stopped Mr. Howard in his pick-up truck Wednesday and found his wife's body also in the vehicle.

Wake County issued a warrant for his arrest on murder charges. He's in custody in Virginia, until he's extradited back to North Carolina. Officials said he should have an extradition hearing possibly as early as Thursday.

More than two dozen crime scene markers dotted the yard of the couple's home as crime scene technicians gathered and processed evidence to figure out how, why, and where Howard was killed.

“We don't know whether it occurred here or not and that's what we've got to piece together,” Harrison said. “That's why we're treating this [home] as a crime scene [and] that [truck] as a crime scene. We know it didn't happen in Galax because the body was in the truck when he was stopped.”

The saddest moment came when the sheriff and investigators talked with the couple's son, who neighbors say is an 18-year-old senior at Wakefield High School.

He walked to a chair and sat down, looking stunned and upset. He broke down crying, dropping his head into his hands. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
