WALLACE, N.C. -- A small community in Duplin County is picking up the pieces after a child was shot and killed over Memorial Day weekend.
Nine-year-old Leon Halley III was visiting family in Wallace when he was struck by a bullet in a drive-by shooting.
Police said three men shot at the house because they mistakenly believed someone was there who owed them money.
The child's family says he was playing video games when he was shot in the face
"You know people say, I don't even know what they say about it but until you go through it, there's no words to describe,” said the victim's father, Leon Halley, Jr., “I've got an empty feeling right now; I've got an empty feeling,” Halley said.
Police have arrested a man who they said is responsible for the shooting, Meshan MacMillian, 24.
MacMillian is facing several charges including first-degree murder.
The slain child's family is asking for help to get his body back to their home in New York for the funeral service.
