WILMINGTON — Hitting the links for a round of golf has been a part of Trey Howell's life since he started tagging along with his father on the golf course as a three year old.

These days, the 25-year-old is starting to make his dreams on the golf course a reality. Howell played in his first Tour tournament at the beginning of June at the Rex Hospital Open at TPC Wakefield.  The Tour, is a development tour for professional golfers who are looking to earn PGA memberships in order to play on the PGA tour.

"Going into it, I didn't know if I could play with those guys. It gave me confidence for the future," said Howell.

Howell, who works as an Assistant Golf Professional at Landfall Country Club in Wilmington, NC, missed the cut at the Rex Hospital Open by shooting a 76 and a 75 in the first two rounds of the tournament. His play in the tournament taught Howell that he needed to improve his short game.

"I hit it further than a lot of those guys, but putting-wise they make everything. They were just strong from 15 feet and in." said Howell.

Howell, a Methodist University alum, who was a member of the Monarchs 2010 Division III National Champion golf team, is going to keep working on his game so he can hopefully make more appearances on the Tour.

"I"m not trying to get ahead of myself right now, I'm just staying in the process. It's definitely a dream to play and on the PGA tour." said Howell.

Howell will play in the Carolina Golf Association's NC Open which takes place July 24-26. His sights are set on qualifying for's Chiquita Classic in Charlotte. The event takes place in September. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
