WILMINGTON--Cast and crew members who worked along side Andy Griffith say the news of his death is disheartening.

Griffith filmed his popular series "Matlock" in the Port City during its last three seasons, leaving a lasting impression.

Lew Musser leads the Hollywood Locations Walk and frequently takes guests right past the federal court building that was used in filming during the last three seasons of Matlock.

"I really love Andy Griffith," Musser said. "There is not a dry eye in the state right now."

Wilmington Regional Film Commission Director Johnny Griffin recalls fond memories of the actor when he frequented Matlock sets at Screen Gems Studios.

"He was always a nice individual, always pleasant to be with and to work with," Griffin said. "Since my last name is Griffin, a lot of times people got confused and thought we shared the same name and might have been related to him."

Chip Hackler works in film studies at UNCW , and had the opportunity to work behind the scenes on three different projects with Griffith in North Carolina.

He says the actor would have up to eight pages of dialogue in Matlock courtroom scenes, but Griffith made it look easy.

"He would be talking to the judge, then talking to the witness, and then be talking to the jury, and hitting the right marks at the right times and also delivering all of the dialogue, andy could make that look effortless," Hackler said.

"We will never forget him, but we will always see him, because sunny Sheriff Taylor will live on in our hearts forever," said Musser.
