CHARLOTTE--Business owner Charlie Chang says rush hour at 7th Street and Hawthorne Lane can be a scary sight.
"Busy intersections. Lots of cars and dangerous driving. People always driving so fast here," said Chang.
The Department of Transportation says nearly 30,000 cars travel through the area everyday. The intersection has had its fair share of car crashes. It's just one reason it made this year's high accident location list.
7th Street made the jump from 75 to 14 on the ranks of Charlotte's High Accident Locations. Freedom Drive and Toddville Road also made the list.
"It doesn't surprise me one bit," said resident Teresa Hunt.
Hunt has lived near the busy intersection for 15 years. She is the property manager at Westside Apartments. Hunt says crashes in the area happen all the time.
"I don't even have to open my window," said Hunt. "When I hear it, I automatically pick the phone up and call 911."
The property manager says many of the accidents involve people who are leaving the apartment complex.
She blames speeders.
"They can't see that there's a red light. They go through it, they crash coming over the hill, they crash," said Hunt. "None of them slow down for that red light."
According to the Charlotte DOT, last year there were more than 15,000 crashes on Charlotte city streets. They hope identifying some of the more dangerous intersections will not only pinpoint areas that could use safety improvements but also raise awareness for drivers.
"People need to slow down. Need to pay attention," said Hunt.
