RALEIGH – A roundabout that was created to ease the commute for drivers around N.C. State University has been the source of several traffic tie-ups and crashes instead, so now the circle connecting Hillsborough Street and Pullen Road will undergo some changes.

Beginning at 8:30 p.m. Friday, the roundabout will be closed as city crews come in and revamp the intersection they say is used by more than 18,000 drivers every day.

Since opening two years ago, Raleigh transportation officials say this circle has seen more than 100 accidents. Engineers with the city of Raleigh and the DOT say reducing the two-lane roundabout to a single lane will curb the number of wrecks that take place.

"I think it was an idea that had good intentions, but like many ideas, it got a little carried away," Raleigh resident, Ted Van Dyke said.

"Pretty much every time I come past here, there's horns honking and tires screeching and people yelling at each other. You can hear the brakes,"said Jenn Hensley, also of Raleigh.

Crews will work throughout the night to make the change. It is expected to be back open to traffic by 6 a.m. Saturday.
