BURGAW, N.C. — A famed NC artist has picked up the paint brush once again after a health scare that could have ended his career.

Ivey Hayes creates brightly-colored paintings of memories he has growing up in eastern North Carolina. Hayes was a right-handed painter until a blood clot in 2010 caused him to lose the ability to hold a brush. At first he thought his painting career was over.

However, at the suggestion of his brother, he tried using his left hand to paint and found his he was able to paint as normal.

"It's not the norm for a person to go from being an artist from the right-hand and now he is doing the same thing and there seems to be no difference using the left hand, which he is has never done before. So that is nothing short than a miracle from God," said Hayes.

The Pender County Library considers itself lucky to be able to hang some of Hayes' original work in its walls, especially since his artwork can be found in galleries all across the country. The library said they have always been a huge supporter of his work and will continue to do so.

"Now that he has shifted to his left hand to paint, it's just truly remarkable. He is a living example  that you can always rise up to the occasion and keep fighting," said director of the Pender County Library Mike Taylor.

Ivey credits a higher power for the ability to continue painting and hopes others will do the same.

"With the right attitude and frame of mind, He can take you places that you never dreamt of," said Ivey.

Hayes said he is currently working on 15 new paintings and plans to create many more. In order to view some of his work, visit his website.
