WAKE COUNTY — Students began a new form of learning in Wake County, the Leadership Academies.

During the week-long summer orientation, students get a chance to meet their classmates and practice team building before their new schools open. The academies offer boys and girls single gender learning environments and early college courses.

The director of the General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Center at N.C. State, Mike Davis, said the camp focuses on providing students with leadership development and service learning skills.

"Our primary purpose is to help young people understand the concepts of leadership and particularly the foundational elements of integrity, honesty, compassion for their fellow man and subordinates, peers," said Davis.

The new Leadership Academies open on August 13. Students in the 6th, 7th and 9th grades will be admitted for the 2012-2013 school year.
