FORT BRAGG — A military judge at Fort Bragg found the third man accused in the suicide death of Pvt. Danny Chen guilty on one of four charges Friday.

Staff Sgt. Blaine Dugas was found guilty of dereliction of duty. Dugas was reduced in rank to a Sergeant from a Staff Sgt. and he will spend three months in military confinement with 90 days credit for time already served.

Prosecutors say Pvt. Chen shot and killed himself last October in Afghanistan after weeks of emotional and physical abuse. They say it was Dugas' duty as a Platoon Sergeant to prevent the abuse.

Defense attorneys for Dugas rested their case Friday morning without calling any witnesses. They made a motion to dismiss the charges against their client, but the military judge denied it. Investigators say Dugas lied when he told them he was not aware of any mistreatment of Chen.

Five other soldiers are also charged in connection with Pvt. Chen's death, two other soldiers have already been tried:
