CARY, N.C — Parents stood in line for hours Tuesday, anxiously waiting to enroll their children for the school year.

As a father of elementary, middle and high schoolers, John March said the process was a bit overwhelming. And like many others who are new to the area, he was surprised by the Student Assignment process and what schools were left.

"One of my sons got the closest school. The other ones were, one was 18 miles away the other was eight miles away. That is my special needs son, which I don't want him that far away. Eight miles away is further away than my schools were in rural Pennsylvania,” March said.

More than 151,000 students are expected to enroll in Wake County Schools this year, leaving many parents with their second, third even fourth pick.

"I'm not really sure right now there's a way to reconcile that. Having been a career in Wake County, I think if we can ensure that the students that are coming into wake are in a seat in a school on the first day, then we'll have a successful year," said Wake County Board of Education member Kevin Hill.

With the school year quickly approaching, school staff say the lines to enroll likely will not decrease anytime soon.

"We will continue probably into the first couple of weeks of school, and it will probably be a good influx during the first 10 days of school even for traditional so it probably won't be until after labor day that we settled down a little bit,” said Deputy Superintendent Cathy Moore.

Anyone who needs to enroll a student or select a Wake County public school, should go to the Office of Student Assignment on Dillard Drive in Cary Monday through Thursday anytime from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
