RALEIGH -- Thursday night, the Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School served as host for superintendent Tony Tata's first ever State of the Schools address. From funding to graduation rates, Tata highlighted the growth the school district has seen among some of its students.

"Our economically disadvantaged students are outpacing our non-economically disadvantaged students and why is that important? Because they have more ground to make up typically," said Tata.

As students prepare to go back to school next week many challenges lie ahead. Tata says school officials continue to look at the student assignment plan.

"We got a directive saying let's take it to the next step, let's give definitive base assignments with choice so we're working on that," he said.

"The parents want stability but at the same time it's hard to have that when there's so much growth," said parent Rebecca Headley.

And school officials hope for a school year that will have parents singing their praises going forward.
