ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Help is on the way to some Halifax County and Northampton County residents whose homes and businesses were damaged in last weeks flood.

Authorities say Saturday's storms damaged 75 buildings within Roanoke Rapids city limits. The storm poured down almost a foot of rain in just five hours.

Governor Pedue toured damage Friday morning while residents continued to cleanup. Gov. Perdue signed signed a State Disaster Declaration for Halifax County and Northhampton County that will allow people who can not get low interest loans from the SBA to apply for state assistance or for a grant.

Perdue is also requesting Federal assistance.

"Some folks have lost everything they have. Some folks have no place to sleep tonight. They have no food. The Baptist men are here. The volunteers are on the ground making a remarkable difference,” said Perdue.

A crisis center will be set up next week for residents to come and apply for help. There is no word on how much aid money will come. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
