LEXINGTON, Va. -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says the U.S. needs to be more assertive in matters of foreign policy. Romney made the comments during a speech at Virginia Military Institute Monday.
He says the U.S. needs to take a more assertive role in Syria and called for new conditions on aid to Egypt and tougher sanctions on Iran, saying there is a lack of American leadership in the Middle East.
"But it is the responsibility of our president to use America’s great power to shape history, not to lead from behind, leaving our destiny at the mercy of events," said Romney.
The Obama administration calls Romney's foreign policy approach "reckless" and "amateurish."
