CHARLOTTE – Panthers head Coach Ron Rivera said Monday that a combination of the player personnel department, scouts and other team officials will be making the decisions following the firing of General Manager Marty Hurney.

Team owner Jerry Richardson announced Monday morning that Hurney has been relieved of his duties. Hurney had been with the team since 2002.

Rivera, the second-year coach whose team is 1-5 following a 19-14 loss to Dallas on Sunday, said changes will be made as he continues to evaluate where the team is now and where it is headed.

"We're struggling through this situation right now, this set of circumstances, and the bottom line is we're not playing very good right now," Rivera said. "We've had some opportunities to win some football games and we haven't done that."

"If you work in any business long enough, you're going to be let go," said Steve Smith. "Tough deal but I have the utmost respect for [Hurney]."

The Panthers will be off Tuesday then back to work on Wednesday as they prepare to visit the Chicago Bears on Sunday.
