RALEIGH -- The University of North Carolina reached a settlement Thursday night with several media outlets, including News 14 Carolina, to release documents that will reveal exactly what caused the NCAA to penalize the Tar Heels football program.

In September, Wake County Judge Howard Manning ordered UNC to provide documents surrounding players who received improper benefits. However, records involving academic misconduct remain protected by privacy laws.

Under the settlement, UNC will pay $45,000 in legal fees on behalf of the media outlets. Both sides agree not to appeal.

Fallout from the scandal included the firing of head football coach Butch Davis and the ouster of Athletic Director Dick Baddour. The team was also hit with penalties including a postseason ban. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
