RALEIGH—A 125-room hotel with retail shops and a restaurant is in the works for Hillsborough Street in Raleigh later this year.

The building is part of a continuing effort to revitalize the space, which N.C. State owns, across from the Bell Tower.

The construction of the hotel is slated to begin possibly in late 2013 or in early 2014. The building will be located where Sadlack's Heroes and other businesses are currently located. The businesses have already received letters that they must vacate by December.

Few details are currently being released as to which company will own the hotel.

Those who are involved in the project, from developers to city leaders, call the project a “destination hotel”, the likes of which will not be seen on Hillsbrough Street. In 2011 when NC State announced plans, officials called the hotel part of a revitalization project which could help the city and univeristy host major events.

City leaders said they are looking forward to anything that may be a sign of more projects to come.

“Any time that you can get new development in any area, you are going to see a lot of additional development follow it. I think what you will see is additional new devlopment or rennovations of existing devlopments as a result of having this hotel,” said Great Raleigh CVB Dennis Edwards.

The hotel would be in addition to the six hotels that are already on Hillsborough St. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
