MONROE, N.C. – The city of Monroe says more residents are renting instead of owning their homes.

The numbers from the recent 2010 Census reveal Monroe has 40 percent renters compared to homeowners. That statistic has some members of the Monroe City Council concerned.

Council member Margaret Desio says one thing the city can do to keep that from growing is limit the number of new rental properties.

"We just can't see, for the health of Monroe, adding to our rental inventory. We just don't need it. There's plenty of rental property here in Monroe, and when the economy turns around, we feel like some of these rental units will be bought," she said.

Desio, who works as a real estate appraiser, says this is the worst disparity between home owners and renters in Union County in nearly 35 years.
