BOLIVIA, N.C. -- Jury selection began Monday in Brunswick County for the capital murder trial for Carl Alston. Alston, 39, is accused of kidnapping, raping and killing Valerie Burns, 49, of Leland back in 2008.

Investigators found Burns' body in the trunk of her burning car on Goodland Road near Leland on July 30. Officials say she was last seen alive a day earlier in Wilmington.

Authorities haven't said what the connection is between the them. The last capital murder case tried in Brunswick County was in 2006.
