WILMINGTON — Marine wildlife officials from UNC-Wilmington euthanized a Risso's dolphin found stranded on Carolina Beach Thursday morning.

The dolphin was found near the 700 block of Carolina Beach Avenue.

Officials said the dolphin was euthanized because it was determined to be the most humane course of action. The animal was severely underweight, had trouble breathing and had abrasions that indicated possible encounters with sharks.

The dolphin went to UNCW's lab for a necropsy. Officials say hopefully they'll be able to find out what caused this offshore animal to come onshore ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
