FAYETTEVILLE—A man was killed after being shot by a Fayetteville police officer Thursday. Police say it happened just after 6 a.m. during a traffic stop off South Virginia Avenue and Morganton Road.

The officer was not injured. The victim has been identified has Nijza Hagans, 22, of Fayetteville. The officer's identity has not been released which is standard procedure in an officer-involved procedure.

Police would not comment on what led to the shooting or why the suspect was pulled over.

"At the course of the traffic stop, the officer fired his weapon at the suspect and the suspect is deceased and we are conducting our investigation at this time," said Gavin MacRoberts, PIO for the Fayetteville Police Department.

There was a robbery at the Dunkin Donuts off Raeford Road, just a few miles from there. Police are not sure at this time if this man was connected to that incident.

The familly of Hagans arrived on-scene but would not comment about the incident.

The officer involved in this traffic stop has been placed on administrative duty and the State Bureau of Investigation is investigating, which is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting. ClientIP: UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
